Odessa

General Information about Odessa

Odessa which has been inhabited since ancient Greek times can be found within the southern parts of Ukraine near the border of Moldova. Odessa is ideally located along the Black Sea and is home to many well known and popular beaches. Boasting a population of over one million residents the city of Odessa and was officially founded as a city back in 1794.

Odessa is best known for its Potemkin Stairs which date back to 1841 and is an astounding 27 metres in height. The staircase was originally designed with two hundred stairs in total but as a result of erosion this number is now one hundred and ninety-two.

While visiting Odessa be sure to find the time to visit the famous Odessa Opera and Ballet Theatre which dates back to 1887. The theatre that stands today was not the original building but was built to replace the original structure that was destroyed in 1873.

Travelling to Odessa is simple with regular flights landing at the the local airport but there are also regular trains arriving from all over Europe such as Prague, Budapest and Istanbul.
