General Information about Izmir
Situated along the Gulf of Izmir and the Aegean Sea, Izmir is Turkey's third largest city with a population of approximately 2,649,600. Izmir has been inhabited since as far back as 3000 BC by the Trojans.
One of the first places that many people visit as soon as they arrive at Izmir is the Konak Square which is the pulse of the city. Be sure to visit the Kadifekale Castle which is situated at the peak of a hill of the same name overlooking the sea. Izmir features a wide range of historical buildings with architecture dating back to 19th century. Izmir is also famous for being the birthplace of the historical author Homer.
Be sure to visit the Agora Open Air Museum of Izmir which the remains of the ancient Smyrna city. For shopping you can not go past the Kemeralti which features many treasures and souvenir's as well as a large variety of clothing.
Izmir is the ideal place for fresh produce with a large variety of fresh fish, fruit as well as a large selection of local cheese. Shish Kebabs are of course the food of choice and visiting Izmir would not be complete without sampling one or two. Izmir is well connected with the rest of the world with the Adnan Menderes Airport being located just 16 kilometres from the city.
