Switzerland

General Information about Switzerland

Switzerland is a landlocked country in Central Europe ringed by mountains. It has France on its Western border, Germany and Liechtenstein on its Northern border, Austria to the East and Italy to the South. The Southern half of Switzerland is mountainous with the rest of the countryside being hilly terrain, partly forest and with many lakes. Its capital is Berne and Switzerland has a population of 7.5 million.

Switzerland has one the best networks of museums in the world and its history is displayed in three major history museums, one of the largest being the National Museum in Zurich. Zurich, Switzerland's largest city also has one of the country's finest art collections at the Kunsthaus Zurich.
With the Swiss passion for hiking, there are over 50000 kms of hiking and walking trails throughout Switzerland clearly marked and with varying degrees of difficulty. Cycling is treated similarly. As you would expect with a mountainous country, Switzerland caters for most of the snow based sports as well.

The summer months in Switzerland are normally sunny and hot with average temperatures of up to 25 degrees. July and August are the best months to visit. The winter months are cool with an average of -2 to 7 degrees with the coldest months being January and February. The glare from the sun can be quite bright so sunglasses are recommended.

Most of its terrain is mountainous with rolling hills, plains and large lakes. The capital is Bern and has a population of over 7,554,661 people.

The agriculture industry is quite low with only 10 percent of the land being arable.

If your a fan of jazz then you must visit in July to see the Montreux Jazz Festival which is one of the most famous festivals in the world with spectacular views of Lake Geneva and the Alps.
