Gotland

General Information about Gotland

Gotland which is the largest island in the Baltic Sea and includes the islands of Faro, Gotska Sandon and the Karso Islands. The island's capital city of Visby which originates from the Old Norse language is the most visited town on the island.

Visby is a city full of history and is often referred to as the 'city of roses and ruins' with the old city being surrounded by a fortress wall. While you are visiting this beautiful city you will have plenty of medieval churches to wander through with as many as 94.

The Gotland Islands features many caves and interesting formations and is home to home to many charming old farmhouses. The official language of Gotland is Gotlandska which is a dialect of Swedish. Getting to Gotland is easy with regular flights and ferries from the mainland.

Sweden's Gotland is located in the centre of the Baltic Sea only 90 kilometres from the mainland with a total area of 3,140 square kilometres. The main town is Visby with a population of over 24,000 people. The islands largest lake is the Bastetrask measuring over 6,3 square kilometres while the deepest is Sigvalde Trask which is over 16 metres deep. Other main towns on the island are Hemse, Slite, Klintehamn, Roma, Vibble, Farosund and Larbro.

Discover What's Happening At Gotland

There is always something to see and do when you visit Gotland, but in particular its capital city Visby is filled with events throughout the year. Held annually in August is the Medieval Week which is filled with concerts, plays, as well as the islanders dressing in period costumes. If you wish to experience some traditional Gotland folk dance then the Folk Dancing Festival on Gotland should not be missed. Held at Visby the international event lasts for three days with over 250 people participating in the old hall at Kneippbyn dating back to 1911.
