General Information about Oviedo

The ancient city of Oviedo which is thought to have been established by two monks back in 761 is ideally located along the Bay of Biscay in Spain's northern parts. Oviedo belongs to the state of Asturias which is often referred to as a principality. Oviedo is closely neighboured by the city of Santander at a distance of 195 kilometres while the city of La Coruna is approximately four hours away.

Oviedo boasts a population of more than 221,200 residents and is home to many interesting historical buildings. Be sure to take the time to visit the Cathedral of San Salvador with its interesting mix of Baroque, Gothic, Renaissance and Romanesque architecture influences. Found within the Cathedral is the Camara Santa de Oviedo which is today listed as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO.

One of Oviedo's most popular destinations is the original section of the city. This area is known locally as Casco Antiguo and is definitely worth visiting.
