General Information about Menorca
Well known for being the second largest of the Balearic Islands, Menorca is closely neighboured by Majorca and Sardinia. Menorca which is listed as a biospehre reserve by the UNESCO is ideally located within the Mediterranean Sea and is one of the most beautiful islands of the Balearic's.
Menorca which is thought to have been inhabited since prehistoric times was under the British rule since the early 17th century. The island was used by the British Navy because of its natural harbour which is located on the eastern side of the island. It wasn't until the early 18th century that Spain regained ownership of Menorca.
Much of the terrain on the island of Menorca is mountainous with the highest point being known as El Toro which is approximately 1,175 feet in height. Menorca is home to approximately 80,400 residents and with the island's wide choice of beaches, restaurants and bars, you are sure to feel at home. Menorca is not as built up as the other Balearic Islands and is not generally considered to be as much of a party scene compared to Ibiza and Majorca.
The city of Mao is the island's capital which is also the home of the islands deepest natural harbour. Ciutadella de Menorca was the islands original capital city and it is here that you will be able to explore through the Cathedral of Minorca which dates back to 1300. The Cathedral of Minorca which is also known as the Cathedral Basilica features architecture of Gothic and neo-classical influences. Also worth exploring while you are visiting Minorca is the islands stone sculptures which known locally as a “Megalith”.
Travelling to Minorca is simple with regular flights landing at the islands capital city of Mao and it is also possible to travel between the surrounding islands via the local ferry service.
