La Coruna

General Information about La Coruna

Found in North West Spain and dating back to Roman times is where you will find the city of La Coruna. La Coruna is ideally located along the Atlantic Ocean and is home to home to over 245,000 residents. The city itself belongs to the Autonomous Community known as Galicia and is closely neighboured by Santiago de Compostela which is the largest city in the community closely followed by La Coruna. Santiago de Compostela is located just 75 kilometres away from La Coruna while Lugo is located at a distance of 98 kilometres.

The coastline of La Coruna is particularly rugged so much so that there is a stretch of coast that is known as The Coast of Death in English but is known locally as Costa de la Muerte. The reasoning behind this name is due to so many ships becoming shipwrecked. Despite this name this part of La Coruna is one of the most visited destinations with the beach itself featuring a number of private beaches.

A must see while you are visiting La Coruna is the local lighthouse which is known as The Tower of Hercules. Dating back to the 2nd Century The Tower of Hercules was originally 34 metres in height but an extra floor was added in 1788 making the tower a total of 55 metres. The Tower of Hercules is still in use today and is listed as a National Monument of Spain.
