General Information about Isle of Skye

Officially known as the Isle of Skye, this beautiful island is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides archipelago off the west coast of Scotland. Skye as it is more commonly called features many bays and peninsulas along its extensive coastline.

Most visitors head straight to Isle of Skye capital Portree which offers a wide variety of attractions and has been made famous by the Harry Potter series, where one of the characters is said to be from.

Over half of the population of the Isle of Skye speak Gaelic with the main religion being the Free Church of Scotland who have very strong beliefs regarding the observance of the Sabbath. Getting to the Isle of Skye is easy with the island being linked to the mainland by the Skye Bridge as well as ferries being available from Armadale and Kylerhea.

You will not run out of things to see and do while visiting the Isle of Skye with many famous castles to explore in particular the Dunvegan Castle, not to mention the beautiful countryside and landscapes.

February is the coldest month to visit with lows of -6 degrees and highs of 2+ degrees, snow doesn't often occur during winter The climate in Isle of Skye is typically changeable with with wind, rain, and clear sky's all occurring in one day.

The Isle of Skye is the second largest island in Scotland measuring in at 1700 square kilometres. Skye as it is commonly referred to has a population of over 9,200 people and the main town and capital is Portree which sports a spectacular harbour. Skye has a coastline that measures up to 350 miles, and where ever you are on the island you will not be further than 5 miles from the sea at any given time. The countryside is full of mountains with the main ones being Black Cuillin and Red Hills.

There is plenty to see and do on the Isle Of Skye all throughout the year, with June welcoming the annual Isle of Skye Pipe Band Festival at Portree, it is a must see if you wish to listen to some traditional Celtic or Gaelic Lyrics. If you are at Skye in September you must see the Duncelt Festival held at the waters of Loch Dunvegan and is well known for its dramatic opening night with its spectacular fire and light show.
