St Petersburg

General Information about St Petersburg

Set along the Neva River and the eastern end of the Baltic Sea, Saint Petersburg and was the capital of Russia from approximately 1713 to 1918 when Moscow was named as the new capital. Saint Petersburg which has been inhabited since 1703 was originally named at Petrograd but was renamed to Leningrad in 1924 up until 1991 where the city was renamed again to Saint Petersburg in 1991. Saint Petersburg is home to almost 5 million people and is Russia's second largest city.

There are many things at Saint Petersburg that are worth visiting and in particular Saint Isaac's Cathedral which took 40 years to build. Then of course there is the famous statue of The Bronze Horseman which is dedicated to Peter the Great. It is because of Aleksandr Pushkin's famous poem The Bronze Horseman that this historical monument gained its name.

Saint Petersburg boasts a large selection of palaces and museums and art gallery's with one of the oldest palaces being the Summer Palace. The Summer Palace can be found in the Summer Garden which has been apart of the city since as far back as 1725.

Be sure to visit the Winter Palace which is situated near the Palace Square as this remarkable building dates back to 1754 and was originally the winter home of the Russian Tsars. The Winter Palace today is home to some of the world's largest art displays.

If you are visiting Saint Petersburg between May and July then you will be able to experience the city's breathtaking White Nights where twilight lasts all night long. This is a truly amazing time to visit along side the popular attraction of seeing the bridges along River Neva being drawn and lowered. These bridges are only opened between May and October.

Saint Petersburg offers a very happening nightlife with a variety of clubs and bars that are definitely worth visiting. While you are there be sure to sample some of the city's traditional dishes with many fine restaurants.
