Chechnya

General Information about Chechnya

Officially known as the Chechen Republic but more commonly known as Chechnya, is a federal subject of Russia. The majority of the population of Chechnya are of Muslim heritage with many people following the Shafi'i, Hanafi or the Maliki while only a small percentage of the population are Russian Orthodox with just one church in Gronzny.

Travelling to Chechnya is currently not recommended due to to military clashes, violent crimes and kidnapping of aid workers and foreigners. If visitors are planning on visiting the country for business or international aid purposes it is recommended that you gain expert opinions before travelling.

Chechnya's experiences long warm summers with highs of 25+ degrees while winters are short cold with average lows of -3 degrees. The mountainous regions are covered in snow for most of the year, however permanent coverage starts at approximately 3,800 metres.

Geographical Information On Chechnya

Chechnya is a part of Russia and can be located in the south west of Russia with Ingushetia, North Ossetia, Dagestan, Savropol Krai and Georgia as its neighbours. It has a total landmass of 15,300 square kilometres and its capital city is Grozny. Chechnya has three major rivers including Terek in the Northern Caucasus, the Sunzha in North Ossetia, and the Argun River. According to the 2002 census Chechnya's population is about 1.1 million.
