Olonkinbyen

General Information about Olonkinbyen

Olonkinbyen which is the unofficial capital of Jan Mayen and is home to a small population of approximately 18 people. The people who live in Olonkinbyen are employed at the weather station and radio station that based on Jan Mayen. During the summer months the population of Olonkinbyen can double.

Olonkinbyen was originally discovered in 1614 and was originally named Svalbaro by the vikings. Olonkinbyen does not have an indigenous population and unfortunately is not set up as a tourist destination.
