General Information about Longyearbyen

Found in the centre of the Svalbard archipelago on the island of Spitsbergen, Longyearbyen is named after John Munro Longyear who established the town in 1906. Longyearbyen is home to just over 2,000 people with the majority of the population being of Norwegian nationality.

While in Longearbyen be sure to visit the Svalbard Museum as well as the Svalbard Gallery. Outdoor activities are very popular at Longyearbyen such as snowmobile safaries, kayaking, dog-sledding, hiking and if you wish coal mining.

Longyearbyen has its own airport and shuttle buses travel to and from the airport to help make everybody's stay in Lonyearbyen more enjoyable. Spring and summer are also the best times to visit Longyearbyen.
