Most of the island's population live at the Olonkinbven and are employed by the Royal Norwegian Defence Force or the Norwegian Meteorological Institute. Currently travelling to Jan Mayen is virtually impossible with no commercial flights or any suitable accommodation.

Jan Mayen can be located in northern Europe north east of Iceland, between the Greenland Sea and the Norwegian Sea. It has a landmass of only 377 square kilometres with a small coastline of 124.1 kilometres. The countryside is mainly volcanic and partially covered in glaciers with no harbours. The highest peak is the currently dormant volcano Beerenberg which measures up to 2,277 metres.
