Skopje

General Information about Skopje

Skopje, which is home to more than 507,000 people and over a quarter of Macedonia's population. Skopje is set along the Vardar River between Central Europe and Athens and has been inhabited since 3500 BC. Skopje is famous for being the birthplace of Mother Teresa in 1910.

Skopje architecture is greatly influenced by its Medieval times and the Ottoman City. In particular you will notice Skopje has many mosques and hamams which are baths with some still remaining to this day. Many of the Medieval buildings were severely damaged in 1555 by an extreme earthquake, but have since been restored.

There are many historical monuments to see while you are visiting Skopje, with the Mustapha Pasha Mosque being the most beautiful. Mustapha Pasha Mosque was built in 1492 and is in its original condition with a charming rose garden.

The best place to see all of Skopje at once is from the Kale Fortress which is 121 metres long. A trip to Skopje would not be complete without visiting the Old Bazaar which is the largest bazaar in the Balkans. While you are visiting this bazaar you will come across many mosques and churches as well as some Turkish baths that are known as amams.

The list is endless of historical sights to see in this remarkable city with countless mosques, some fine museums and art gallery's. Skopje offers some tasty traditional Macedonian foods in a wide range of restaurants and cafes.
