Ohrid

General Information about Ohrid

Set along Lake Ohrid which is an remarkable three million years old, Macedonia's charming town of Ohrid is one of the oldest towns in Europe. Orhid which is an UNESCO Heritage Site was originally known as Lychnicdos back in 353 B.C.E but was renamed to Orhid in 879 C.E. Ohrid is filled with many monuments, churches, as well as many buildings built in traditional Ohrid architecture.

One of Ohrid's most famous buildings is the Dome of Staint Bogorodica Perivlepta which was built back in 1298. Visiting this remarkable monument is truly an experience not to be missed. Other outstanding churches to visit while you are visiting Ohrid are Saint Sophia Church, Saint Pantelejmon Plaoshnik and Saint Jovan Kaneo Church just to name a few.

Be sure to visit the Antique Theatre which Macedonia's only Hellenistic theatre. If its art your interested in then the Icon Gallery is the place for you with some amazing displays of Macedonian Art.

There are many events on throughout the year at Ohrid with the Ohrid Summer Festival being one of the most popular music and drama in all of Macedonia. The festival runs during July and August and draws musicians from all over Europe.
