General Information about Kaunas

Kaunas is one of the most popular tourist destinations, and also the second largest city, in Lithuania. Kaunas is located in the centre of Lithuania where the Nemunas River and the Neris River merge near the Kaunas Lagoon. It is believed that the area of Kaunas has been settled since the 10th century and that the city was founded in 1030. Today Kaunas has a population of over 358,100 people.

There are many attractions and places of interest in Kaunas such as the Kaunas Castle, Vytautas' Church, Kaunas Cathedral Basilica, St Michael the Archangel Church, Kaunas Zoo, Kaunas Fortress and Napoleon's Hill. There are also many museums in Kaunas which are popular with visitors.

It is believed that the Kaunas Castle was originally built during the mid 14th century in a strategic position on an elevated bank of the Nemunas River. The Gothic style Kaunas Castle underwent a three week long seige in 1362 by the Teutonic Order. The seige ended with the Teutonic Knights capturing the castle and celecbrating this with a Mass on Easter Sunday. Today the round tower of the castle houses a popular art gallery.

Vytautas' Church, officially named Vytautas' the Great Church of the Accession of the Holy Virgin Mary, is a Roman Catholic church that is also one of the oldest church in Kaunas. Vytautas' Church was built in the early 1400's for Franciscan monks and foreign merchants on the bank of the Nemunas River. Construction was funded by Vytautas the Great and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary as he believed she saved his life on the battlefield.
