General Information about Venice

Venice Statues at Night

Venice is one of the major cities and most popular tourist destinations in Italy. Located in the north of the country in the Veneto region, Venice is much the same as it was six hundred years ago and stretches across 110 small islands in the Venetian Lagoon. It is believed that the original inhabitants of Venice were refugees from Roman cities including Padua, Aquileia and Altino who were fleeing from the Germanic invasion. Today Venice is home to over 272,000 people.

There are many attractions and places of interest in Venice such as the Rialto Bridge, St Mark's Square, Campo San Polo, Doge's Palace, Ca' Rezzonico, Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, Basilica di San Marco, Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute and La Fenice Opera House. Another of Venice's world-famous attractions is the Bridge of Sighs.

Basilica di San Marco is the most famous of Venice's churches and one of the greatest examples of Byzantine architecture in the city. Basilica di San Marco was originally a chapel, not a cathedral as it is today and has been the seat of the Patriarch of Venice since 1807. The cathedral was constructed in 828 and only meant to be a temporary structure. Since the 14th century, very little in Basilica de San Marco has changed.

The Rialto Bridge is one of the most famous bridges in Venice and is the oldest of the three which go across the Grand Canal. The first dry crossing of the Grand Canal was a pontoon bridge which was constructed in 1181. In 1250 this was replaced by a wooden bridge as the Rialto market on the eastern bank had increased the traffic quite heavily. Because of the importance of the market, the bridge was renamed to the Rialto Bridge. In 1310, the bridge was partly burnt in part of a revolt, then it collapsed in 1444, and again in 1524. The idea of rebuilding the Rialto Bridge in stone was first discussed in 1503, but was not completed until 1591.
