General Information about Pisa

Pisa is one of the major cities and tourist destinations in Italy. Pisa is located in Tuscany, in the centre of Italy on the mouth of the Arno River which flows into the Ligurian Sea. Ancient Roman authors refer to the city of Pisa and claim it was founded thirteen centuries before the birth of Christ. There have been archaeological findings which prove that there were inhabitants of the city in at least the 5th century BC. Today Pisa has a population of over 90,000 people and it one of the most well known cities in the world.

Due to Pisa's long and complex history, the city has many places of interest and attractions including Piazza dei Miracoli, Knight's Square, St Sixtus church, Duomo di Pisa, Campo Santo, Santa Maria della Spina and the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo. Pisa is also home to the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa.

The Duomo di Pisa, or Pisa Cathedral, is located at the heart of the Piazza dei Miracoli in the centre of Pisa. Construction on this medieval cathedral began in 1064 by Buscheto and is made of grey marble and white stone. Pisa Cathedral features bronze doors, open galleries including statues of Madonna and Child and the tomb of Buscheto. Some parts of the cathedral were replaced after a fire damaged it in 1595.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the most popular and well known attraction in Pisa. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is the freestanding bell tower of the Pisa Cathedral and contains seven bells. Originally standing vertical upon it's construction in 1173, the tower started to lean to the south east soon after due to poor foundations. The Leaning Tower of Pisa has just under 300 steps and is leaning at a 3.97 degree angle making the top of the tower lean 3.9 metres from where it would stand if the tower had remained vertical.
