General Information about Naples

Naples is a historic city in southern Italy that is over 2,500 years old. Naples is one of the major cities and tourist destinations in Italy as well as being the capital city of the Campania region and the provence of Naples. Naples was originally called Neapolis after being founded by the anicient Greeks. The city then became a major part of the Roman Republic, being central in the Empire. Later, Naples was the capital city if the Kingdom of Naples, then the capital of Two Sicilies until Italy became unified. Today Naples has a population of over one million people.

Naples features many prominent examples of architecture dating from Medieval, Renaissance and Barouque periods as well as many attractions and places of interest such as the Royal Palace, San Francesco di Paola, Castel Nuovo, Castel dell'Ovo, Sant'Elmo, the Cathedral of Naples, Piscina Mirabilis, Grotta di Seiano and Catacomba di San Gennaro. Naples is also home to over 440 historical churches, making it one of the most Catholic cities in the world.

The Royal Palace in Naples is one of four residences used by the Borboun Kings of Maples during their reign of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies from 1730 to 1860. The Royal Palace was designed by Swiss-born Italian architect Domenico Fontana and constructed on the site of a former Spanish viceroyal residence. Since it's original construction, the 17th century Royal Palace has had some additions and changes. The first of these took place in the mid 18th century, then again in 1838 after a fire devestated the palace. The Royal Palace also needed repair work after bomb damage from World War II.

Duomo, or the Cathedral of Naples is the main church of Naples and dates back to the 14th century. The cathedral is dedicated to San Gennaro (St Januarius, the city's patron saint) and was built on the foundations of two palaeo-Christian basilicas. The Chapel of the Treasure of St Januarius is the main attraction of the cathedral and features frescoes by Domenichino and Giovanni Lanfranco. The Cathedral of Naples has many other artworks by 14th century masters and mosiacs which date from the 4th century.
