General Information about Florence

Florence is one of the major cities and tourist destinations in Italy. Florence is located in the centre of the nation in the province of Florence, and is the capital city of the region of Tuscany. Florence is situated on the Arno River and was an important city in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and is world-famous for it's art and architecture. Florence was the birthplace of many famous artists, including the three great masters of the High Renaissance period Michelangelo, Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci. Today Florence has a population of over 366,400 people.

Florence has many places of interest and famous attractions such as Santa Maria del Fiore, Campanile Tower, Bapistery, Fountain of Neptune, Medici Chapel, Uffizi Gallery, the Accademia dell'Arte del Disegno, Pitti Palace and the Santa Croce Basilica. There are also many museums in Florence including the Museo di Storia Naturale di Firenze.

The Basilica Santa Maria del Fiore is the main cathedral and church of Florence and was designed by Arnolfo di Cambio in the 13th century and constructed on the site of a former church which was crumbling due to it's age. Florence also needed a much larger place of worship as the population of the city was growing rapidly. Today the Basilica Santa Maria del Fiore is the fifth largest cathedral in the world and can hold up to 30,000 people at one time. The most famous feature of the cathedral is it's polychrome marble dome which was designed by Filippo Brunelleschi in the early 15th century.

The Uffizi Gallery, housed in the Palazzo degli Uffizi is one of the oldest and most famous art museums in the world. Construction of the Uffizi began in 1560 and took 21 years to complete. Uffizi was the original location of Michelangelo's David in 1504, today a replica in on display along with many replica scuptures done by Donatello, Giambologna, Ammannati and Cellini. The Uffizi Gallery was has been open to the public since 1765.
