General Information about Catania

Catania which can be found within the province of the same name is ideally located along the Ionian Sea in East Sicily. The city of Catania is overshadowed by the nearby Mount Etna which is an active Stratovolcano. Mount Etna is considered to be an active volcano and rising to a height of 10,924 feet. Mount Etna is in fact one of Europe's largest active volcanoes. Catania is closely neighboured by Syracuse at a distance of 81 kilometres with Modica at a distance of 120 kilometres with Sicily's capital of Palermo is set at a distance of 210 kilometres.

Catania is well known for its Baroque architecture in particular its churches such as the Church of St Benedict and the Catania Duomo. Unfortunately, many of Catania's historical landmarks have been destroyed during the city's history due to eruptions from Mount Etna. Despite this fact the city of Catania still boasts a vast selection of historical monuments and attractions. One of the city's most well known cathedral's is the Cathedral of Sant'Agata. Dating back to 1086 the cathedral is still standing today even though the building has been affected by an earthquake back in 1140.

Catania is well connected with Italy and Sicily with regular flights landing at the city's airport. It is also possible to travel to Catania via train and bus with regular trains arriving from many destinations such as Rome, Naples, Palermo, and Syracuse.
