General Information about Bologna

Bologna which was originally known as Felsina when the city was first inhabited back in 534 BCE can be found in the Northern parts of Italy. Bologna is one of Italy's favourite city's and is the capital of the region known as Emilia-Romagna. Bologna is home to over 373,000 residents and is nestled within the Po Valley near the Po River. Bologna is closely neighboured by the towns of Ravenna, Modena and Ferrara.

Bologna is famous for its local cuisine and is often referred to as Italy's Food Capital. Bologna also features many interesting historical buildings and monuments but the city's most recognisable attraction would have to be the Towers of Bologna. The Towers of Bologna were originally built back in 1108 and are also known as the Leaning Towers. The Asinelli Tower is the highest tower rising to 97.2 metres but was originally 70 metres high when it was first built. The Garisenda Tower is 48 metres high and is on an angle of approximately 3.22 metres whereas the Asinelli Tower is on an angle of approximately 1.23 metres.

Also worth exploring through while you are visiting Bologna is the city's church known as the Basilica of San Petronio. This church is famous for being the world's fifth largest fitting in approximately 28,000 people. Also known as the Cathedral of Saint Peter, construction of the church first began in 1390 but was not completed until 1479. You will find the church located within Italy's most well known town squares of Piazza Maggiore.

Bologna is well connected with the rest of Italy and Europe with regular flights landing at the Guglielmo Marconi (Bologna) International Airport. Bologna is also serviced by Eurostar with regular trains arriving from many city's in Italy such as Rome, Venice, and Florence.
