Killarney

General Information about Killarney

Killarney is a town in County Kerry in south western Ireland and is one of the most popular tourist destinations of Ireland. Killarney gets it's name from the Irish term Cill Airne which means 'The Church of sloes'. Killarney is located north of the MacGillicuddy Reeks, on the north eastern shore of the Lough Lein/Leane River which is part of the Killarney National Park. In 2007 Killarney was awarded the 'Best Kept Town' award from the Department of the Environment and the Northern Ireland Amenity Council. Killarney has a population of just over 13,400 people.

There are many places of interest and attractions in Killarney such as St Mary's Cathedral, Ross Castle, Muckross Abbey, Torc Waterfall, the Gap of Dunloe, the Black Valley, Killarney National Park, Dinis Island, Innisfallen Island, Mangerton Mountain, Muckross Friary, Killarney Model Railway and the National Museum of Irish Transport.

St Mary's Cathedral, located in the centre of Killarney is a Roman Catholic cathedral. Construction on the cathedral was begun in 1842 and it took until 1855 to be completed. St Mary's Cathedral was designed by British architect Augustus Welby Pugin whose design was inspired by the ruined cathedral of Ardfert and the Salisbury Cathedral.

Ross Castle, located on the Lough Lane in Killarney is the ancestral home of the O'Donoghue clan which was built in the 1400's. The tower house of Ross Castle is surrounded by walls and round towers and is a typical example of an Irish stronghold dating from the middle ages. Legend tells that O'Donoghue was sucked out of the grand chamber window at the top of the castle along with his horse, table and library and disappeared into the lake where he now lives and keeps a close watch on the happenings around the castle.
