One of the most popular cities to visit in South Iceland is Vestmannaeyjar which is located on the Heimaey Island, south of Iceland in the North Atlantic Ocean. Vestmannaeyjar has a population of around 4,200 people. The main attractions of Vestmannaeyjar include the Náttúrugripasafnið (Natural History Museu), Skansinn which is where the lava stopped flowing in the early 1970's and the many gold courses. One of the most popular activities in Vestmannaeyjar is sailing around the island itself.
Vik is a small village in South Iceland with a mere 300 inhabitants. Despite it's small size, Vik is a very important part of everyday life for both the tourists and locals of South Iceland, especially around the Mýrdalsjökull Glacier, which lies atop the active Katla volcano. The most attractive feature of Vik is the black beach which is famous for the Reynisdrangar (black basalt coloumns created by the sea).
