Heraklion

General Information about Heraklion

Heraklion is the capital and largest city of the Greek island Crete. Heraklion is located in the Heraklion Prefecture of Greece (which it is also the capital of), in the north of the island, on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It is believed that there may have been a port at the site of Heraklion as far back as 2000BC, although the city wasn't founded until 824AD. Today Heraklion has a population of 137,700 people and is the fourth largest Greek city.

There are many landmarks, places of interest and attractions in Heraklion such as the Palace of Knossos, Koules, the Venetian Walls, Loggia, St Minas Cathedral, St Titus Church, St Catherine of the Sinaties Church, St Mark's Basilica, Historical Museum of Crete and Odos 25 Avgousto.

Saint Mark's Basilica, also referred to as the Church of Saint Mark, was built by the Venetians in the 12th century and dedicated to their patron Saint Mark. During Turkish reign, the church was turned into a mosque and a minaret was added. In 1956 the church was restored to it's original state. Today it is used as an exhibition hall and features copies of Byzantine frescoes.

The Historical Museum of Crete in the northern part of old Heraklion is one of the most popular museums in the city. This museum features exhibits and displays from Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish periods of Cretean history as well as more recent displays. The Historical Museum of Crete also features a vast collection of tradtional Cretean folk art, local costumes, clothes, carvings and embroidery. There is also a recreation of a typical Cretean house.
