Corfu

General Information about Corfu

Corfu, also known as Kerkyra, is the northernmost island of the Greek Ionian Islands and lies to the northwest of Greece, near the coast of Albania. According to Greek mythology, the island is name Kerkyra after Poseidon's wife Korkyra as they both lived on the island. The islanders were named Phaiakes after their son Phaiax. Many battles and conquests have taken place on Corfu Island and the island has been controlled by various nations in the past. Today Corfu Island has a population of over 107,800 people.

There are many interesting places and attractions in Corfu Island such as Old Town, Palaio Frourio, Neo Fourio, Ano Plateia, Kate Plateia, a music pavilion, Church of Saint Jason and Saint Sosipater, Avii Deka, Benitses, Kassiopi, Palaia Anaktora and Gardens and Pontikonisi.

The city of Corfu is the capital and main town on Corfu Island and has been an important part of Greece since the 8th century. The city is known as Kastropolis (Castle Town) after the three castles which are built here. In 2007, Corfu city was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List and has a current population of almost 40,000 people.

The Church of Saint Jason and Saint Sosipater, located at Anemolylos, is one of the best examples of 12th century Byzanine architecture in Corfu Island and features hagiographies, icons and an icon screen. The Church of Saint Jason and Saint Sosipater is the oldest church on Corfu Island and is dedicated to the bishops who brought Christianity to the island in the first century AD. The most prominent feature of the church is the octagonal dome.
