Mainz

General Information about Mainz

You will find the city of Mainz ideally located along the Rhine river within the German state of Rhineland Palatinate. Mainz which is the states capital was officially founded in 13 BC and is home to a populatin of more than 200,000 residents. The city is closely neighboured by Frankfurt at a distance of just over 40 kilometres. Mainz is also found near Wurzburg which is approximately 152 kilometres away while Bonn is located at a distance of 170 kilometres.

While you are visiting Mainz be sure to spend some time at the city's cathedral which is known as Mainz Cathedral but is also referred to as Der Hohe Dom zu Mainz. The Mainz Cathedral dates back to 975 and features architecture of Romanesque influences. Also worth visiting is the St Stephens Church. Here you will be able to view the churches famous Chagall blue choir windows. Travelling to Mainz is simple regular trains arriving from Frankfurt.
