FrankfurtGeneral Information about FrankfurtFrankfurt is one of the largest cities and most popular tourist destinations in Germany. Frankfurt is located in the central south west of the nation in the state of Hesse and lies on the River Main. Frankfurt is Germany's fifth-largest city and the financial and transportation centre of the nation. Frankfurt is also one of the two largest financial centres in continential Europe (the other is Paris, France). Frankfurt has a population of over 667,500 people and is the only German city listed in the Alpha world cities list.
Frankfurt has many attractions and places of interest to visit such as Saint Bartholomeus Cathedral, Roemer, Saint Paul's Church, the Old Opera House, Saint Katherine's Church, Hauptwache, Zeil, Stadel and Naturmuseum Senckenburg.
Saint Bartholomeus' Cathedral is a Gothic style church which was constructed in the 14th and 15th centuries and was where the kings of the Holy Roman Empire were elected from 1356. Saint Bartholomeus' Cathedral has never been a bishop's seat but is one of the most important Imperial buildings, so the church has been referred to as a cathedral since the 18th century. Saint Bartholomeus' Cathedral has been reconstructed twice, first in 1867 are it was destroyed by a fire, then again in the 1950's after it was severely damaged during World War II.
Stadel, officially named Stadelsches Kunstinstitut und Stadtische Galerie, is one of the most important and famous museums in Frankfurt and houses the most important collection of artwork in Germany. Stadel has seven centuries worth of Europen artwork and was originally built in 1818. Pieces on display are of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles as well as dating from the 19th and 20th centuries.
