General Information about Nice

Nice is a major tourist destination in France that is also the historical capital of the County of Nice. Nice is located in the south east of France on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and is one of the leading tourism centres on the French Riviera. First evidence of settlement in the Nice area date back over 400,000 years. Since then Nice has been one of Europe's most important and involved cities. Today the city has a population of over 347,000 people.

Nice has many interesting sites, places of interest and attractions to offer such as the Promenade des Anglais, Chateaux de l'Anglais, Monument aux morts, Cathedrale Sainte-Reparate, Saint-Jacques Church, Cathedrale Orthodoxe Russe St-Nicolas, Sainte Jeanne d'Arc Church and Palais de la Prefecture.

The Cathedrale Orthodoxe Russe St-Nicolas was built in 1859 is said to be the oldest Russian Cathedral in Western Europe. The Cathedrale Orthodoxe Russe St-Nicolas is one of the most important monuments in Nice and the biggest Russian Orthodox Church to be constructed outside Russia. The Cathedrale Sainte-Reparate also in Nice is a Roman Catholic cathedral and is the seat of the Bishop of Nice.

The Promenade des Anglais, or 'Walk of the English', is a promenade along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and was constructed in the 18th century by Englishmen who spent their winters in Nice. In weekends, The Promenade des Anglais is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike and has become a favourite place for skateboarders and in-line skaters.
