Marseille
General Information about Marseille
Marseille is one of the major tourist destinations in France and is also the second-largest city in the country. Marseille is located in the south east of France on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and is also the largest commercial port of the country. Humans have inhabited the area of Marseille for close to 30,000 years but the city was officially founded in 600BC by the Greeks from Phocaea. Today Marseille is home to almost 830,000 people and is the third largest metropolitan area in France.
Marseille is a major centre of art and history and features many sites of interest and attractions such as Abbaye St-Victor, Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde, Musee d'Art Contemporain, Musee d'Histoire de Marseille, Marseille Arc de Triomphe, Musee d'Archeologie Mediterranee and Cathedrale de la Major.
The 12th century Romanesque Abbaye St-Victor features twin tombs of matyrs dating from the 4th century and a 3rd century sarcophagus. Also here is the Basilique St-Victor which dates from between the 11th and 14th centuries with foundations going back to early Christian and Carolingian Times. The original catacomb chapel and Grotto of St Victor can be seen in the crypt and a 13th century black Madonna is housed inside the basilica.
Musee d'Art Contemporain, or Museum of Contempory Art was opened in Marseille in 1994 and features statues, sculptures, paintings, videos and photographs by many famous names including Caesar, Tinguely, Orozco, Dieter Roth and Rodney Graham. Some of the most famous artworks in the Musee d'Art Contemporain are those by pop artist Andy Warhol.
