General Information about Lyon

Lyon which has been inhabited since 43 B.C.E, is the capital of the Rhone-Alpes region in East Central France. Lyon is home to over 1,783,400 residents and is the second largest city in France after Paris. Lyon is ideally located along the River Saone which is a tributary river of the River Rhone. Lyon is closely neighboured by the city of Dijon at a distance of 196 kilometres and is closer to Bern in Switzerland than Paris. Bern is located just over 300 kilometres away, while Paris is set at a distance of 460 kilometres.

The Old Town of Lyon is one of the city's most visited destinations which boasts many interesting historical buildings and museums. There are many interesting things to see and do while you are visiting Lyon and the Lyon Cathedral is just one example which dates back to 1476. The Notre-Dame de Fourviere is one of Lyon's most visited historical buildings with its impressive architecture. The Notre-Dame de Fourviere was completed back in 1896 and is set in on the top of Fourviere hill in Lyon's Old Town.

Lyon plays host to many festivals and events throughout the year and one of the city's most popular event would have to be the Biennale d'Art Contemporian. The Biennale d'Art Contemporian features a variety of art displays from a variety of international artists. Another popular event is The Fete des Lumieres which takes place each December. Lyon glows as the streets are lit up with many fantastic light displays.

Travelling to Lyon is simple with the Lyon Saint-Exupery Airport being located just 25 kilometres away from the city. It is also possible to travel to Lyon via car and train with regular trains arriving from Marseille and Paris.
