Cannes is one of the major cities and tourist desinations in France. Located in the extreme south of France, Cannes is one of the most popular places to visit along the French Riviera and is world famous for hosting the annual Cannes Film Festival. Evidence has suggested that the area of Cannes has been settled since the 2nd century BC, however it was not named Cannes until the 10th century AD. Today, Cannes has a population of over 70,400 people.

Cannes features many attractions and places of interest including Alles des Etoiles du Cinema, La Croisette, La Suquet, the Chapel of St Anne, Iles de Lerins, Ile Ste-Marguerite, Ile St Honorat and Eglise Notre Dame d'Esperance. There are also many popular beaches and museums in Cannes as well as various cinemas and theatres.

Ile Ste-Marguerite is a 15 minute boat road away from the city of Cannes and is world famous for being the site of incarceration of the mysterious Man in the Iron Mask. Ile Ste-Marguerite features the Musee de la Mer, or Museum of the Sea, which houses archaeological findings from shipwrecks which date back to the first century BC. The cell of the Man in the Iron Mask is also in the museum.

The Eglise Notre Dame d'Esperance, situated at the top of La Croisette is the most historic church in Cannes and houses a 17th century Madonna on the High Altar and a wooden statue of St Anne which dates from the 1500's. The Eglise Notre Dame d'Esperance was built between 1521 and 1627 and combines both Renassiance and Gothic elements.

One of the most popular times to visit Cannes is during May when the annual Cannes Film Festival is held in the city. Tickets to the event are impossible to get unless you are part of the film industry but tickets to individual screenings are available.
