Arles is one of the major touirist destinations of France in Europe. Arles is located in the Bouches-du-Rhone department of the former French province Provence in the southeast of France. The Rhone River flows through Arles and divides into two branches which then flow into the Mediterranean Sea. Arles is the largest comune in France and is currently home to over 52,000 people.

There are many sites and attractions in Arles including many important remains of Roman rule in the city such as the Roman Theater, the amphitheater, The Alyscamps, The Thermae of Constantine and the cryptoporticus. Also famous in the city is the Church of St Trophime. Arles is also home to the Musee de l'Arles et de la Provence Antique and Musee Reattu.

The Alyscamps is a large Roman necrpolis which was founded by the Roman's and is said to have been visited by Christ himself. By the 4th century, the necropolis became Christianised and there were already thousands of tombs on the site. Bodies from all over Europe were sent to be buried in The Alyscamps and it was used as the primary burial ground in Arles for over 1,500 years. Saint Genesius, beheaded in 303 is buried here as was Saint Trophimus, the first bishop of Arles.

The Musee de l'Arles et de la Provence Antique is one of the most visited places in Arles and tells of the city's history from 2500BC to the 6th century AD. The main attractions of the museum are the Roman statues, artifacts and many items from 4th century Christianity including various sarcophagi.
