Rovaniemi is the commercial centre and capital city of the Lapland province in northern Finland. Rovaniemi is situated between the hills of Ounasvaara and Korkalovaara where the Kemijoki River and Ounasjoki River merge. Rovaniemi is one of the most successful cities in Finland and one of the largest in the world by area. It is believed that Rovaniemi has been a continuous settlement since the Stone Age and cultivation began in 750BC. Today Rovaniemi has a population of over 58,000 people.

Rovaniemi features many prominant landmarks such as the Jatkankynttila Bridge, Rovaniemi Town Hall, Lappia House, Arkitium Museum, Santa Claus Village, Santapark, Lutheran Church, an art museum, the world's most northern branch of McDonalds and the Orthodox Church.

Santa Claus Village lies just outside Rovaniemi and was built to be the home of Santa Claus as many believe he originated from Finland. Santa Claus Village features part of the Arctic Circle, Santa Claus Post Office, Santa Claus' Office and many shops and restaurants which follow the Christmas theme. All letters sent from Santa Claus Post Office are postmarked with a Santa Claus postage stamp. Santapark, an underground amusement park, is within walking distance of Santa Claus Village.

The Arkitium is one of the most popular places to visit in Rovaniemi to get an appreciation of the northern way of life. The Arkitium is a museum, science centre and cultural centre and features many exhibitions of the history, culture, traditions and modern life of the people of the Arctic region. The Arkitium also has a library and restaurant.
