General Information about Windsor
Windsor is a surburban town and one of the most popular tourist destinations in Britain. Windsor is part of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead unitary authority and is located in Berkshire in the south east of Britain. The village of Old Windsor, which lies two miles to the south of the city, predates Windsor by 300 years and has been a royal settlement for many centuries. Windsor is world famous as the place of residence of the British Royal Family in Windsor Castle. The city has a population of just under 30,000 people.
Windsor Castle, dating back to the time of William the Conqueror, is the largest inhabited castle in the world and also the oldest to be continuously occupied. Windsor Castle is the most famous landmark in Windsor and is one of the main residences of the British Royal Family. The original wooden castle built by William the Conqueror in the 1070's was situated on the present site of the Round Tower.
St George's Chapel, a part of the Windsor Castle, is one of the most visited sites in Windsor. The entrence to the chapel is via Henry VIII monumental gateway which was constucted by the king in 1511. St George's Chapel is one of the finest examples in Windsor of Perpendicular architecture. Construction was begun in 1474 by Edward IV and completed by Henry VIII. The chapel features various monuments and houses many tombs of the Engligh Royal Family including the tombs of George V and Queen Mary.
Windsor is also home to one of the world famous Legoland theme parks. Legoland in Windsor was constructed on the site of the former Windsor Safari Park and opened in 1996. This Legoland wa the second to be built in the world and is mainly targeted at children between the ages of 2 to 12 years and features Lego-themed rides, Lego models and Lego workshops.
