General Information about Oxford

Found in South East England and originally known as Oxenaforda, is the historical city of Oxford. Oxford was officially settled as a city back in 1542 and is also the county town of Oxfordshire.

Oxford is ideally located along a part of River Thames which is referred to as The Isis. Oxford is also close to many neighbouring towns and cities with Reading be located just 26 miles away while Swindon and Banbury are at a distance of 30 miles. The closet major city near Oxford is Northampton at a distance of 45 miles while London is located at a distance of 59 miles.

Boasting a population of over 149,100 Oxford is well known for many reasons but the most well known feature would have to be its University. Known simply as the University of Oxford, the historical university has been a feature of Oxford since as far back as the 11th century.

There are many interesting attractions worth exploring through while you are visiting Oxford but it would have to be the city's colleges that are visited more often, however visiting hours are limited. Also worth visiting is the famous Christ Church Cathedral which dates back to 1525 and is thought to be the smallest of its kind in England. Be sure to keep your eye out for Oxford's most well known monument of the Carfax Tower with is located within the centre of the city and dates back to the 13th century.

Travelling to Oxford is simple with regular trains arriving from Birmingham, Manchester and London. It is also possible to travel to Oxford via car and bus.
