General Information about Nottingham

Nottingham which is often referred to as the 'The Queen of the Midlands' and has been inhabited since pre-Roman times. Found within the East Midlands in Nottinghamshire county and located approximately 16 miles from Derby and Mansfield and 27 miles away from Leicester. Nottingham is home to over 287,000 residents and was first established as a city in 1897.

Nottingham features many fascinating historical buildings with many boasting architecture from Victorian times. One of the most visited attractions of Nottingham would have to be the Nottingham Castle and the Sherwood Forest. Nottingham Castle dates back to 1067 but was destroyed in 1651. The castle that stands today was rebuilt back in 1831.

The Sherwood Forest is well known far and wide because of Robin Hood and attracts as many as 500,000 visitors each year. While you are visiting Sherwood Forest be sure to ask for directions to the well known Major Oak which is though to be approximately 1,000 years old. One of the best ways to learn about Nottingham is by visiting the Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery which features exhibitions from the 17th and 18th century.

Nottingham is well connected with the rest of England with regular flights landing at the Easat Midlands Airport and the Robin Hood Airport Doncaster. You can also travel to Nottingham via car, bus or train with many trains arriving along the East Midlands Mainline.
