ManchesterGeneral Information about ManchesterManchester is one of the major cities and tourist destinations in Britian. Manchester is located in a bowl-shaped land area which is bordered by Pennine Hills and the Cheshire Plain. The city centre of Manchester is situated on the eastern bank of Irwell River and lies 160 kilometres northwest of London. Manchester is the third largest conurbation in the United Kingdom and is home to over 452,000 people.
Manchester is world famous for being the hometown of 1980's band The Smiths singer Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr, as well as for it's sites and attractions including The Manchester Wheel, The Village, Castlefield, Manchester Museum, Piccadilly Gardens and Manchester Town Hall.
Piccadilly Gardens is situated in the northern quarter of Manchester and was the original site of the Manchester Royal Infirmary which occupied the space from 1752 to 1910. Piccadilly Gardens became the largest open inner city green space in Manchester in 1914 following the complete removal of the Manchester Royal Infirmary. There are many impressive buildings surrounding Piccadilly Gardens as well as many statues on the site, including those of the Duke of Wellington and a Queen Victoria monument.
The Manchester Museum is one of the most visited places in Manchester and has been a city institution for over 100 years. The Manchester Museum features many displays of both natural and social sciences including a fossil skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Most famously, the Manchester Museum has a large collection of Egyptian artifacts from Kahun and Gurob which have been at the museum since 1890.
