Chester

General Information about Chester

Chester is located in south west England in the county of Chesire. The city is situated on the River Dee, close to the nation's border with Wales and lies about 40 kilometres south west of the city of Liverpool. Chester was originally founded in 70AD as a Roman fort and gained city status in 1541. Chester is one of the largest settlements in the Cheshire county, with a population of more than 77,100 people.

Chester is a thriving city with many attractions and activities to see and do, such as the city walls, Chester Cathedral, Roman Amphitheatre, St John the Baptist Church, Peckforton Castle, Gosvenor Museum, Chester Zoo and The Rows.

The Chester Cathedral is built on the remains of an ancient Saxon church and was originally a Benedectine Monastery dedicated to St Werburgh, the patron saint of Chester, in 1092. After the dissolution of monasteries in 1547, it was rededicated as the Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary. The site has been an important place of Christian worship for more than one thousand years and remains a pivotal point of the Christian community in Chester to this day.

The ancient Roman parts of Chester are among the most visited places in the city. The city walls and the Amphitheatre are both very popular sites to see and are listed Grade 1 by English Heritage. The Amphitheatre is the most complete set of Roman ruins in Chester and was discovered in 1929. The area was once the largest in the country, with a seating capacity of more than 7,000 spectators.
