Carlisle

General Information about Carlisle

The city of Carlisle has been inhabited since Roman times and can be found in North West England within the county of Cumbria. Carlisle is home to over 72,000 residents and is located just 20 miles away from the town of Penrith and approximately 40 miles away from The Lake District. Carlisle is ideally located near the River Eden which is a tributary of the River Irthing, River Caldew, River Eamont and River Petteril.

The most well known attraction of Carlisle would have to be the Carlisle Castle which was built approximately around 1108. Carlisle Castle has seen many wars and tribulations in its time and is even well known for being the prison of Mary Queen of Scots at one time. Also worth visiting is the Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery which has been a feature of the city since 1893.

Carlisle is well connected with the rest of England with regular trains arriving from Glasgow, Newcastle and Leeds. It is also possible to travel to Carlisle via car and bus.
