CanterburyGeneral Information about CanterburyLocated almost 90 kilometres southeast of London is the city of Canterbury which is a popular tourist destination in the south east of England. The city has a long history, starting in the prehistoric age as the main settlement of the Celtic tribe Cantiaci. The city was later taken over by the Romans and Saxons and raided by the Danes. Today Canterbury is the seat of the Archbisop of Canterbury, the head of the Church of England and home to more than 43,500 people.
There are many famous landmarks and places of interest to visit in Canterbury such as Canterbury Cathedral, St Martin's Church, St Augustine's Abbey, Canterbury Castle, Museum of Canterbury, St Thomas' Cemetery, Green Court, Canterbury Roman Museum and the village Chilham.
The Canterbury Cathedral is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury and the mother church of Anglicanism. The history of the Cathedral dates back to 600AD when it was established by St Augustine. The gothic Cathedral is a World Heritage Site and has been a place of Christian worship for more than 1400 years. The Canterbury Cathedral has been the centre of many historical events such as the murder of St Thomas Becket in 1170. It is also his burial place, and the burial place of King Henry IV and Edward The Black Prince.
Another part of the World Heritage Site at Cantercury is St Augustine's Abbey which was founded in 597AD and marked the rebirth of Christianity in southern England. The Abbey is situated just outside the city walls and was once the Christian centre of England. St Augustine's Abbey was originally constructed as an Anglo-Saxon burial ground for the Kings of Kent and is also where St Augustine was buried after his death.
