General Information about Cambridge
Cambridge is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Britain. Cambridge is located about 50 kilometres north-northeast of London on the River Cam and is predominantly a university city. Evidence suggests that the area of Cambridge was occupied before the Roman Empire existed, during 1000BC. The area remained undeveloped until the Roman invasion of Britain in the early 1st century AD but has since become one of Britain's major cities and is the heart of the high-technology centre Silicon Fen. Cambridge has a population of over 117,900 people.
Cambridge contains 31 universities and colleges, the oldest existing college dating back to 1284. Other famous colleges include Christ's College, King's College, Magdalene College, Trinity College and St John's College. Other popular sites to visit in Cambridge include Great St Mary's Church, River Cam and Trinity Street.
Peterhouse is the oldest college in Cambridge and dates back to 1284. Founded by Bishop of Ely, Hugo de Balsham, Peterhouse is the smallest college in Cambridge other than specialized colleges (which who only admit women, mature age students, etc).
One of the largest colleges belonging to the University of Cambridge is St John's College which was founded in 1511 and named after St John the Evangelist. St John's College was built on the site of 13th century Hospital of St John and is famous for it's choir which was established in the 1670's. St John's College has been home and school to many famous historical and social figures such as Douglas Adams, Saint Richard Gwyn, and Sir Harry Hinsley. 10 Nobel Prizes have also been awarded to past students of St John's College.
