Bristol

General Information about Bristol

Bristol, which is thought to have been inhabited since the Iron Age was officially declared a county back in 1373. You will find Bristol within the region of South West England just 12 miles away from Bath, 39 miles away from Swindon and a distance of 41 miles away from Gloucester in Gloucestershire.

One of the most notable natural features of Bristol is the River Avon which is also known as Bristol Avon. The River Avon flows right through the city into the Bristol Harbour. Crossing the River Avon is one of Bristol's most recognisable monuments known as the Clifton Suspension Bridge. The Clifton Suspension Bridge was originally opened in 1864 and connects Bristol with council ward of Clifton. The Clifton Suspension Bridge is 31 feet wide and a massive 1,352 feet long.

Listed as a Grade I Building is the St Mary Redcliffe church, which features architecture of medieval influences and dates back to the 12th century. Bristol's Christmas Steps are of particular interest which date back to 1669. These historical steps are today home to many popular antique stores and can be found near the St John's Gate.

With a population of over 410,000 residents it is no wonder that Bristol is a city overflowing in culture. Boasting many historical monuments and museums such as the Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery. Boasting a range of exhibitions which are housed in historical building that boasts Edwardian Baroque architecture. This fascinating building was originally built in 1823 and is now listed as an Grade II Building.

If you happen to be visiting Bristol in August then you will be in for a real treat as this is when the annual Bristol International Balloon Fiesta is held. Bristol attracts many visitors each year and this is just one of the city's many attractions.

Bristol is well connected with the rest of England and Europe with regular flights landing at the Bristol International Airport. There are also many trains travelling to Bristol arriving from many major cities and towns such as London, Birmingham, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Bath and Southampton.
