Brighton

General Information about Brighton

Brighton is one of the major cities and tourist destinations in Britain. Located in East Sussex in the south of Britain, Brighton is one of the largest sea side settlements in the country. Originally known as Brighthelmstone, the area of Brighton has been settled since the early 1080's. During the 18th century the city became an important health resort. Today Brighton is home to over 155,000 people and joined with the nearby city Hove to create the city of Brighton And Hove in 2000.

There are many attractions and places of interest to visit in Brighton including the Royal Pavilion, Brighton Pier, Volk's Electric Runway, St Nicholas' Church, Church of St Peter, The North Laine, Sea Life Centre and Fabrica. The beaches in Brighton are also among the main attractions of the city. Most frequented by visitors and locals alike is Brighton Beach.

The Royal Pavilion, also known as Brighton Pavilion, is a former place of residence for royalty in Brighton. The Royal Pavilion was built in the 19th century as a seaside retreat for Prince Regent, who later became King George IV. King William IV, King George IV's successor, also resided in the Royal Pavilion. The government sold the pavilion to the city of Brighton in 1850.

St Nicholas' Church, dating from the 14th century, is the oldest surviving building in Brighton. This Anglican church is also Brighton's original parish church and is commonly known as the 'mother church of Brighton'. The Norman front, which is carved with scenes from The Last Supper, Christ's baptism and St Nicholas, the patron saint of seafarers, dates back to 1160. St Nicholas' Church also includes a graveyard which houses many tombs. The oldest of these being that of Captain Nicholas Tattersell who aided King Charles II in his escape from the Battle of Worcester.
