Bridport

General Information about Bridport

Bridport is a part of the Dorset county located in southern England, about 25 kilometres south west of the town of Yeovil. The town is situated on the confluence of the Asker and Brit rivers, near the western coast of the world famous Chesil Beach. Bridport was originally a small fishing port and rope making centre, but now attracts many visitors and second home owners and has earned the nickname 'Notting Hill on Sea'. The town currently has a population of around 13,000 people.

The town is a popular tourist destination of England, especially in the summer months. Some of the major attractions of Bridport include the Jurassic Coast, Chesil Beach, The Bridport Museum, the Georgian Town Hall and the Medieval Parish Church and Chantry. The family owned and operated Palmers Brewery of Bridport is also located in the town.

The Bridport Harbour Museum is located at West Bay in a converted slat house which overlooks the harbour. The museum tells the history of the Bridport area and the story of it's rope and net making industries which date back over 700 years to the Middle Ages, when the townsfolk were encouraged by King John to make ropes and nets for ships.

Built in 1794, the Palmers Brewery of Bridport is one of the few breweries in England which has been continuously operating for more than 200 years on the original site. The brewery was founded by the Gundry family and has continued to be owned and operated by the family since it's opening day. The Palmers Brewery brews five beers which are brewed according to the traditional recepies established over 200 years ago.
