Birmingham

General Information about Birmingham

Birmingham which has been inhabited since the 6th century and a major city of England. You will find Birmingham within the West Midlands region just over two hours away from London and thirty minutes from Coventry. Home to over 1,006,500 residents, Birmingham features a fine blend of architecture from the 18th, 19th and 20th century's.

Some examples of Birmingham's historical architecture are the Saint Phillip's Cathedral which dates back to 1710, another well known feature of the city is the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery which dates back to 1885.

The Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery features a variety of exhibitions dating right back to the 14th century. These exhibitions are housed in one of Birmingham's oldest building known as the Aston Hall which was built back in 1618. Despite its size, the Barber Institute of Fine Arts is well worth visiting. This popular art gallery features some fantastic works from the 20th century.

If you have a sweet tooth then a trip to the city's popular Cadbury World should not be missed. It is here at Birmingham where this well known chocolate originated. Birmingham is home to many beautiful parks with the Birmingham Botanical Garden's & Glasshouse being of particular interest as well as the Cannon Hill Park and Sutton Park. For those who enjoy going to the movies then visiting the Electric Cinema well not disappoint as it is Enland's oldest running cinema.

There are so many ways of getting into Birmingham with flying being one of the most popular. The Birmingham International Airport is in fact one of the busiest airports in the county. Arriving via rail is also another popular means of transportation with regular trains arriving from London, Manchester, Bristol, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Glasgow.
