BathGeneral Information about BathBath is a historic Roman city which dates back to the 1st century AD. Located in Somerset, in the south west of England, Bath was originally known as Aquae Sulis after the goddess Sulis and treated as a shrine by the Celts. Although Edgar was crowned the King of England here in 973, Bath was not an official city until Queen Elizabeth I granted Bath city status in 1590. In 1987 Bath became a UNESCO World Heritage Site and now has a population of over 80,000 people.
Bath is famous for it's hot springs, Georgian architecture, Medieval heritage and of course the Roman baths and temples which were constructed here between the 1st and 6th century AD. There are many other tourist attractions in Bath such as the Bath Abbey, Great Pulteney Street, the Jane Austen Centre, Thermae Bath Spa and the Royal Crescent. There are also many museums in Bath.
The four main features of the Roman Baths in Bath are the Sacred Spring, the Roman Temple, the Roman Bath House and the museum which houses items found in the Roman Bath House. The first temple constructed at Bath was by the Celts and dates from 60AD. During the next few hundred years the bathing complex was built during the Roman occupation of Britain. The Roman Bath House includes a caldarium (hot bath), tepidarium (warm bath) and frigidarium (cold Bath).
Next to the Roman Baths is the Bath Abbey, the last Gothic church in Britain. Bath Abbey, also known as The Abbey Church of Saint Peter, was a former Benedictine monastery and Anglican Parish Church which still holds services today. Arthur Phillip, founder of Sydney and first governer of New South Wales in Australia had his memorial and burial service held in Bath Abbey. Bath Abbey can seat up to 1,200 people and features several monuments dedicated to many important historical figures such as Beau Nash, Admiral Arthur Phillip and William Hoare.
