Basing House, built in 1525, was once a five-storey Tudor palace which was comprised of more than 380 rooms and rivalled Hampton Court Palace in it's grandiosity. Silchester was one of the largest and most important Roman towns during the Iron Age when this area was known as Calleva Atrebatum. The settlement was abandoned in the 5th century and has remained unoccupied. The most important ruins in the area are those of the 2.5 kilometre town wall, dating from the 3rd century, a medieval church and an amphitheatre which held more than 4,500 spectators at a time.
