Tórshavn

General Information about Tórshavn

Found on the east coast of Strymoy, Torshavn which is the main town of the Faroe Islands is thought to be one of the oldest capitals in Northern Europe. Often referred to by its nickname of Havn, Torshavn is home to approximately 12,350 people and was originally settled by vikings as far back as the 10th century.

On arrival to Torshavn one of the first places that must be visited is the old part of town which is known as Tinganes. Situated in an historic location the Tinganes is over 500 years old and was the original parliamentary meeting spot of the Vikings in 825 AD.

Torshavn features many museums that should definitely not be missed with the museum of Natural History and an historical museum in Hoyvik. Torshavn is also home to some beautiful churches with the Vesturkirkjan and the Torshavn Dome which is also the second oldest church in the Foroe Islands. Also Torshavn Cathedral which was built in 1788 and The Nordic House should not be forgotten about as they truly a sight to see

One of the best way to mingle with the locals is down at one of the local restaurants as well as the local shopping district.
