Vis

General Information about Vis

Found within the Adriatic Sea is the island of Vis which is closely neighboured by the island of Hvar. Home to over three and half thousand residents, Vis has been inhabited since Neolithic times. Vis is also apart of the Split-Dalmatia County which boasts a population of over 463,000 residents in total.

The main town of Vis which is also called Vis is home to over 1,700 residents and boasts a beautiful bay that faces the north eastern side of Hvar. Komiza is the islands most populated town with approximately 2,500 residents and located just below the island's highest peak known as Hum. Hum rises to 587 metres and provides the town of Komiza with some spectacular scenery.

The island of Vis is well known for its wine producing and if you are planning a trip in September you will be able to witness the regions grape vines being harvested and crushed. If you are visiting Komiza be sure to ask for directions to the Saint Nicholas Convent monastery which dates back to the 13th century.
